Regular readers might have noticed that the literary heroes of this (not in the least bit American or even estadunidense) blog are the great baseball writers Roger Angell, Thomas Boswell and Roger Kahn. The right words carefully put together, goes the argument, capture the soul of sport or life as much as a photo or a film clip. Words can describe the sounds and the smells, words can tell of the past, present and the future. Words, in short, can capture just what it's like to watch a big game under the lights at Arruda on a hot summer's night, with all that hope and all that disappointment pressing down on you as heavy as lead. Words, words, words...

Though sometimes you just have to say feck it
